“Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them. They must, they have no other models.” – James Baldwin
Have you ever found yourself lying awake at night, wondering:
How do I support my child’s ambition without letting pressure, life, and school swallow their joy?
Or maybe you’ve asked:
How can I model rest and self-care when my own heart aches to protect them from struggle?
Perhaps you’ve held quieter questions that whisper:
How do I help my child see how brilliant, kind, hardworking, and talented they are when on the inside they battle a negative self-image, academic pressures, and the weight of trying to be perfect, while still taking on more?
If these questions sound familiar, you are not alone.
In a world shaped by racism, relentless work demands, cultural expectations, and political uncertainty, raising academically thriving Black youth is already a revolutionary act. And yet, even when our teens and young adults are brilliant, kind, and hardworking, the pressure to be perfect—and the weight of being one of few Black students—can leave them (and us) feeling isolated, anxious, or overwhelmed.
Many parents quietly wonder:
Many parents quietly wonder:
"What is my part to own as a parent, and what role are educational systems & the larger culture playing in my child's struggles?"
Maybe you’ve read the books, said the prayers, tried affirmations, found mentors, and modeled joy and balance--but your heart still breaks at seeing them struggle.
Maybe you wish you had a sounding board—a place for thoughtful guidance, creative problem-solving, and gentle encouragement as you navigate supporting your Black or mixed-race teen or young adult.
If so, this offering was created with you in mind.
