(Virtual) Building Together: For Couples in Business
Kathy Rushing, M.S. Founder, Lodestar Relationship Coaching
Why an Operating System (OS) for Copreneurs (married couples in business together)?
Working together doubles what you can build. It also exponentially changes what you stand to lose.
You've put everything on the line, betting on yourselves to create a business that fulfills a dream, a mission, a way of life.
Most couples plan for the upside — two people's energy, skill, and drive, aligned toward one goal. Almost none plan for what happens when it's not that simple anymore. The business can be doing fine, but the marriage may be under strain — one of you wanting to step back and not knowing how to say it, a disagreement that never got resolved, until it starts showing up in how you talk to each other at work. When you don't agree on what's happening, tension spills into the business and the home.

The business can be doing fine, but the marriage may be under strain — one of you wanting to step back and not knowing how to say it, a disagreement that never got resolved, until it starts showing up in how you talk to each other at work. When you don't agree on what's happening, tension spills into the business and the home.
Every serious business runs on an operating system — a way of making decisions, running meetings, keeping everyone rowing in the same direction. Copreneur OS is that same idea, built for the one part of the business no operating system has ever covered: the marriage underneath it.
Over six months, you and your spouse build a shared vision, clear roles, real financial decision rights, a communication approach that accounts for how each of you are "wired" and operate under pressure, and boundaries that protect both your relationship and how you show up at work. By the end, you have a living document — your Copreneur Operating System — that the two of you actually use, not just agree to in the room and forget by Tuesday.
This isn't therapy, and it isn't generic business coaching. It's the thing almost nobody offers: a relationship-first approach to running a business together, built by someone who's spent thirty years doing the relationship work — married to someone who's spent decades building businesses.
Who's it for?
Building Together: Copreneur OS is for married couples (or committed partners) who work in their business together. Maybe you consider it a family business, regardless of who "owns" it. Ideally, this is for couples who are not in crisis, or on the edge of anything falling apart, but perhaps at a turning point. Maybe you've never actually sat down to decide who owns what, and it's starting to show.
This is for you if:
- You work together and you love each other — but the hats keep stacking, and you can't always tell which one you're wearing.
- You've never had a real conversation about what happens to the business, or to each other, if one of you needs or wants to step back.
- Your roles evolved by accident, not on purpose, and the strain of a mismatch is starting to show.
- You want tools, not a diagnosis — a plan that will protect the marriage and the business as it grows.
Why do you need an OS?
Because you likely already have systems for almost everything else. Systems take the guesswork out of running a business. What most copreneur couples don't have is a system for the relationship the whole business is actually built on — and when that part runs on improvisation, everything downstream inherits the ambiguity. Who really has final say on big decisions? Are there boundaries to protect your marriage or is the business like a mistress, demanding all the attention. What happens when something outside the business — a health scare, a hard season with a kid, a parent needs help — shows up and neither of you has the capacity to spare?
An operating system doesn't mean turning your marriage into a spreadsheet. It means you stop re-litigating the same decisions every few months and start operating from something you built together, on purpose, before you needed it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from business coaching?
I don't touch your sales funnel, your pricing, or your growth strategy — that's not my expertise, and I won't pretend it is. What I know is what happens between the two of you while you're building all of that: the roles, the decisions, the boundaries, the communication. Mark's bonus session is where a business owner's perspective comes in directly.
How is this different from marriage counseling or therapy?
This isn't diagnosis-and-treatment work — we're not naming a condition or working from a clinical model. It's solution-focused: we start with where you want to land and build the systems and skills to get there. My background is thirty years in family systems and marriage and family therapy, but Copreneur OS is coaching, not therapy.
Is this tax-deductible as a business expense?
Many copreneur couples treat this as a deductible business education expense — worth confirming with your accountant for your specific situation.
What if something comes up mid-program — an illness, a busy season — and we fall behind?
Life happens. Six months is a realistic pace for building a foundation you'll use for years to come, not a deadline you're racing against. If you need more room, we extend it. You set the pace.
What if one of us is more hesitant about this than the other?
That's common, and it's fine to start there. Session 1 is built to give both of you room to say what you actually want — not just what the more eager partner wants.
How much time does this actually take?
Sessions are 75-minutes, plus some pre-work for the OS sessions (30-60 minutes) in between. You schedule appointments at a pace that works for you.
Does it have to be both of us, every session?
The core work is built for the two of you together. Occasionally a one-on-one check-in is useful for one of you to think something through — that can happen within the program when it's needed.
How is this different than the Relationship Roadmap?
Relationship Roadmap is a 3 month engagement that personalizes the CRAVE framework. Any couple can benefit from this 5 pillar framework as it focuses on Communication & Conflict, Rhythms that connect, Appreciation, Vision, and Energy.
The Copreneur OS is designed specifically for couples in business together. Sessions are spread over 6 months to allow time to thoughtfully create the agreements that will be guardrails for the business and the marriage.

Partnership Operating System covers:
- Vision Integration — What Are We Building Together? You'll each name your individual goals, then build a shared vision as a couple and as a business — what you want the next year to actually look and feel like. We cover this first because a clear vision becomes the compass for every decision that follows.
- Applying Your DISC Pairing in Business How each of you operates under pressure, where your "wiring" may clash, and how to support each other in high-stakes moments instead of misreading each other. Sets the foundation for ensuring roles are a good fit for each person and the business. Understanding Role clarity makes your communication differences concrete instead of confusing.
- Roles, Responsibilities & Financial Decision Rights Who owns what, how decisions get made, and the financial structure underneath it all. Do roles reflect each person's strengths? What happens if one of you ever needs to step back from the business or decides that working together is not the best thing individually or for the marriage? Once you know where you're going, you need to know who's doing what to get there.
- Boundaries for Home and Work Where "spouse" ends and "business partner" begins, and how the two of you show up as unified leaders once someone else — an employee or a client — is in the room. With the foundation set, boundaries are what make it sustainable.
- Communication Rhythms & Conflict Tools for Business Partners Real tools for the moments boundaries alone can't cover — how to repair quickly when stress rises, and how to have the hard conversations without derailing the relationship. Once your structure is in place, you need the tools for when it gets tested.
- Your Partnership Operating System Everything from Sessions 1–5, integrated into one living document you'll actually use. You've built all the pieces — now they become one system.
Each session includes pre-work and a deliverable that builds toward your complete Partnership Operating System.
