Developmental Edit (Full Draft)
This is a developmental edit of a full draft of your book. I read your entire book and provide in-page notes and a detailed editorial letter. Price is set for a 250-page book. Higher page counts will be charged at the rate of $5/page.

Here are some of the questions I ask as I edit your book.

  1. Does the opening hint at the core conflict and ground the reader in time and place?
  2. Does the book have a central dramatic question and is it big enough to sustain a whole book?
  3. Are the characters believable?
  4. Does the main character have a want that drives the story forward?
  5. Are things too easy on the protagonist? Does the antagonist need to be strengthened?
  6. Are there subplots and do they support the main characters’ central dramatic conflict?
  7. Is there a lack of conflict? That is, a lack of obstacle and if there are obstacles, are they powerful enough to drive the whole story?
  8. Are there enough relationships between important characters?
  9. Does dialogue serve a dramatic purpose or is it just people talking?
  10. Is there interiority on the page, or does it read more like a movie script? (Prose fiction’s biggest strength is the ability to go into people’s thoughts and feelings.)
  11. How is backstory revealed? Do flashbacks slow the present action too much?
  12. Is backstory motivated or is it just there to inform the audience?
  13. Are interior monologues grounded in story action?
  14. Is the novel mostly scenes with minimal summaries? (ie, the dreaded “show don’t tell”)
  15. Is the plot surprising but inevitable?
  16. Does the main character go through an internal change, a shift in worldview?
  17. Does the character have a flaw or a trauma from the past that needs to be healed through this story?
  18. Does the story have a point? Does the author have a point of view?
  19. Does the first chapter launch us into the story?
  20. Are there opportunities for humor?
  21. Are motivations too subtle to understand? Or so on the nose that they’re boring?

Client Feedback
“ I want to thank you again for your insightful and HELPFUL review of the first draft of my novel. Your perceptiveness, wisdom, and suggestions were extremely helpful. I know it can be daunting for writers to request feedback from anyone, much less a pro like yourself, and I want them to know that it’s not just valuable, it’s motivating! Because of your help, I am eager to get into the next draft. I can’t thank you enough! ”
