I’ve had several ski holidays and felt like every time I went my skiing got worse instead of better. I was getting more and more anxious to the point I almost cancelled my holiday. And yet when skiing worked I loved it! Then someone suggested contacting Kate - I’m so glad they did. We talked through what I was anxious about, how I felt, my experiences, … and then things started to click. I realised I did have skills but my anxiety was taking over. I was catastrophising- imagining the worst that could happen. Kate helped me remember my successes. Armed with a recording to reinforce what we had been doing I tried one more ski holiday. I breathed slowly, and just listened to the instructor and …. I skied! I enjoyed it. I did turns. I didn’t fall over. Working with Kate has been a really important part of my development as a ski racer. The physical side of the sport is obviously huge, but the mental side is just as important, and Kate has helped me understand that in a much deeper way.
Through the work we’ve done together, I’ve learned how to manage the pressure that comes with racing, especially on the start line when everything can feel quite intense. Kate has helped me build routines and ways of thinking that allow me to stay present, trust my preparation, and focus on the process rather than the outcome.
One of the biggest things for me has been learning how to reset after mistakes or difficult races. Instead of overthinking runs or carrying frustration forward, I’ve developed tools to reflect, learn from it, and move on quickly so I can perform again the next day.

Learning to ski as an adult isn't easy, but it is somewhere near impossible when your level of fear stops you from even being able to try. I had been on ski holidays in the past and each experience had been a hard slog through a week of tears, frustration, fear, tiredness, anxiety and a knot in my stomach. I knew I could do better, and I knew I wanted to enjoy it, but I just didn't know how. I was nervous about coaching, about what it would reveal and whether it would work.
